CHARLOTTESVILLE—Former Connecticut Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. has donated his political files to the University of Virginia, where he graduated from law school 50 years ago.

The U.Va. Library will open more than 1,000 boxes of the 77-year-old’s files, including those on the Watergate hearings, creation of the Americans With Disabilities Act and other events. After the papers are catalogued and archived, they are expected to be available to the public in 2010.

After serving one term in the U.S House of Representatives starting in 1969, Weicker, then a Republican, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1971 and held the post until 1989. He was elected as an independent to a four-year term as Connecticut’s governor in 1990.
