SUFFOLK—Officials say the nearly 5,000-acre wildfire in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Suffolk is contained but it continues to smolder in spots.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says has been 100 percent contained. It began June 9 with some logging equipment.
Smoke still is visible in the area and may be noticeable in Hampton Roads, depending on the wind direction.
Officials say there are 18 firefighters on the scene. That is down from 450 at the height of the fire.
The refuge covers 110,000 acres in Virginia and North Carolina
