MANASSAS—Prince William County Police Chief Charlie Deane says the monthly total of suspected illegal immigrants arrested in the county has nearly tripled since May. The number of those later released without charges also rose sharply.

Deane reported Tuesday that 75 illegal immigrants were arrested in August and 59 were released.

Since the county’s crackdown on illegal immigration began in March, police have arrested 341 illegal immigrants. Fewer than 2 percent of people charged with crimes turned out to be undocumented.

Meanwhile, the county supervisors have released a citizen survey on the policy. About 60 percent of residents are satisfied with how police are carrying out the policy. Fourteen percent are dissatisfied; 7 percent oppose the policy, and 17 percent provided no opinion.
