Appel is honored by state treasurers group

Arlington County lawyer Kevin R. Appel has been honored for more than 20 years of providing legal advice to Virginia treasurers. Appel was awarded the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia 2008 President’s Award at the group’s annual conference in Williamsburg.

Appel retired in May as Chief Deputy Treasurer and Legal Counsel to the treasurer of Arlington County. He is now with the law firm of Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson LLP, which focuses on tax collection services.

Despite his move to the private side of tax collection, however, Appel is still the go-to guy for Virginia treasurers seeking legal help. He continues to serve as legal counsel to the state treasurers’ association, as he has since 1987, and he regularly teaches tax collection classes.

“I get a complete range of questions,” he said. “Everything from tax collection to advice on hiring and firing to problems with a governing body. It’s been fascinating over the years.”

Appel is enthused about working with the Linebarger firm. “We collect from people who forgot to pay their taxes,” he said. “It’s God’s work as far as I’m concerned, because if everyone doesn’t pay his fair share, the rest of us have to make up the difference.”

Appel is a past president of the Arlington County Bar Association and a former member of the Virginia State Bar Council.
