Waterside to get slight makeover as Norfolk ponders what’s next

NORFOLK—Norfolk’s Waterside complex will get a modest makeover while city officials ponder its long-term future.
City Council agreed last week to spend several million dollars on the facility over the next few years. The council also will hold town hall meetings to get ideas from the public about the best use for the 25-year-old downtown landmark.
Waterside began as a festival marketplace and is credited with sparking downtown revitalization. It was later transformed into a shopping destination but is now dominated by restaurants and nightclubs. Many of those businesses are struggling.
Some council members have suggested converting Waterside into condominiums, office space, a marina or a hotel.
