FAIRFAX—Fairfax County officials have unveiled a list of midyear spending cuts to close a $58 million shortfall in the current budget.
County Executive Anthony Griffin says the worsening economy and the stagnant housing market have cut anticipated revenue from business and sales taxes and real estate recordation taxes.
Besides across-the-board program cuts, the county will halt capital spending and nonessential travel and county employees will be furloughed for one day on Jan. 2. County departments will cut their personnel budgets by 2 percent.
Griffin has also suspended vehicle replacements for the coming year and is proposing a withdrawal of up to $30 million from the rainy-day fund.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald Connolly says he supports Griffin’s decisions.
