The Virginia Bar Association Foundation will start a pilot program in February on the Rule of Law in Roanoke area middle schools that it hopes to make part of the 7th and 8th grade civics curriculum statewide.
The program will emphasize the Rule of Law as the foundation for democracy and the freedoms American enjoy.
The foundation will produce a DVD featuring prominent lawyers and judges talking about the history and meaning of the rule of law and a Web-based curriculum that will include lesson plans and other resources for teachers to use in preparing their students for the program.
Course materials will be developed by a task force composed of lawyers, judges, educators, administrators and judges.
They will be taught by lawyers who will be required to completed training on how to teach the program. Faculty and administrators at Washington and Lee University law school will sponsor a symposium for teachers on how to use the materials.
Materials developed for the program are intended to be generally available on the Internet for use by schools, civic groups and local bar association in educating the public about the significance of the Rule of Law.
VBA President Mike Pace of Roanoke described the program earlier this month at a meeting of the Lynchburg Bar Association. “Lawyers love to teach, and lawyers will get a better image in the public due to this program,” Pace said.
The project is financed by a partnership grant for the Virginia Law Foundation, which promotes the Rule of Law, access to justice and law-related education.
