Fairfax approves one-day furlough around holidays

FAIRFAX—About 9,000 Fairfax County employees will get an extra day off without pay around the holidays.

The Board of Supervisors on Monday approved a one-day furlough for all non-essential county employees on Jan. 2. The furloughs are expected to save up to $2 million and help the county close a $58 million budget shortfall.

County Executive Anthony Griffin also warned supervisors that the financial situation could get worse and require more budget cutting. A slow holiday shopping season and slow home sales would further reduce revenue from sales taxes and real estate recordation taxes.

Griffin has also ordered 2 percent across-the-board program cuts, has suspended hiring and capital spending and has proposed a withdrawal of up to $30 million from the rainy-day fund.
