The Virginia Housing Development Authority recently earned honors from a national organization for its efforts to promote environmentally friendly apartments. The National Council of State Housing Agencies recognized Virginia’s program with one of its special “Going Green” awards.
VHDA’s Green Building Incentive Program encourages construction of more environmentally friendly housing though a tax credit program and resource grants. According to a news release from the governor’s office, the program helped boost the percentage of developers building green, affordable apartments from 40 percent in 2007 to 92 percent in 2008.
“I look forward to unveiling even more environment and energy initiatives in the coming weeks,” said Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
