VCU degree-awarding matter concluded

The agency that accredits Virginia Commonwealth University says the university won’t face sanctions or warnings in its handling of the case of the improper awarding of a bachelor’s degree to Richmond’s former police chief.
Belle S. Wheelan, president of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, says the accreditation group for the 11-state region decided VCU had taken adequate steps to ensure it was a one-time occurrence.
Wheelan says the commission won’t offer an opinion on whether Monroe should return the degree he got in 2007 despite failing to meet academic requirements. She said it’s the university’s decision.
Monroe is now police chief in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, N.C.
