Gov. Timothy M. Kaine cancelled a governor’s mansion reception when he discovered it was being advertised as a fundraiser for a political group.
According to the Washington Post, a political action committee formed to help Democratic women seek elected office asked for donations from $25 to $1,000. The solicitation, posted on a liberal fundraising Web site, invited people who purchased a ticket to a panel discussion at the Richmond Marriott to a reception at the governor’s mansion.
While the legislature is in session, Kaine is prohibited from raising money for himself or state political committees.
Members of the political group said the reception was never designed to be a fundraiser. However, the possibility that it might appear that Kaine was using the mansion to raise money for Democrats prompted the governor to call off the event.
