Type of Case: Wrongful death, failure to diagnose bacterial endocarditis
Attorney: David J. Pierce, Norfolk
Summary: A 24-year-old woman died from bacterial endocarditis of the mitral valve, a somewhat rare disease that can cause a variety of non-specific symptoms. Her attorney contended that the symptoms she did have – fever, chills, myalgia, weight loss, fatigue, lightheadedness, weakness and a non-productive cough – were classic indicators of the disease.
Instead she was treated for a urinary tract infection and depression.
