Mental health funds coming from settlements

Attorney General Bob McDonnell is announcing $1 million for mental health services to come from settlements with two pharmacy benefits management companies.

The grant will help the Virginia Health Care Foundation and other health organizations establish or expand the availability of prescription medications, basic mental health services and primary medical care, according to the Associated Press.

  1. The bulk of that money is coming from a settlement that’s over a year old, and most of it was *required by the terms of the settlement* to be used to “benefit low-income, disabled or elderly consumers of prescription medications, to promote lower drug costs for their residents, to educate consumers concerning the cost differences among medications, or for similar purposes.”

Naturally McDonnell waited until the campaign was in full swing to announce his grant – or at least, as long as he thought he could wait without seeming opportunistic…oops, too late!
