Roanoke attorneys get high court win

The U.S. Supreme Court summarily overturned an embezzlement conviction for a client of Roanoke attorneys Tony Anderson and Melissa Friedman.

Anderson and Friedman’s client, former Burruss Co. President John Jackson, was charged with embezzling from an employee pension fund when he and the company’s CFO withheld money from it, reports The Roanoke Times.

Defense counsel argued that the fund should have become a creditor in bankruptcy proceedings when the Lynchburg lumber business’ collapsed a decade ago. The high court agreed.

The court, however, did not reverse the fraud and theft convictions. Both cases were remanded to U.S. District Court Judge Norman Moon, although Jackson now faces a lesser sentence.
