Mims elected AG

The Virginia General Assembly elected former delegate and senator William C. Mims as the state’s 45th attorney general on Thursday.

Mims had served as chief deputy attorney general under Attorney General Bob McDonnell since January 2006. McDonnell stepped down earlier this month to run for governor, and the election of Mims had been expected because he is highly respected and popular with his former legislative colleagues.

A native of Harrisonburg, Mims graduated from the College of William & Mary and earned law degrees from George Washington University and Georgetown University.

He served as chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf and deputy legislative director for Sen. Paul Trible before opening a law practice in Leesburg.

Mims was elected to the House of Delegates in 1991 and to the Virginia Senate in 1997.

He will supervise an office with 337 attorneys and staff until January 2010, when the attorney general elected in November will be sworn in.

“Bob McDonnell was an excellent attorney general, and I plan to continue his legacy by providing the very best legal services for Virginia’s citizens,” Mims said after his election.

“The office of the attorney general is the law firm for Virginia’s governmental agencies,” he added. “I am proud to work with such dedicated public servants.”
