Presenting the ‘Largest Law Firms’ for 2009

In this issue, Virginia Lawyers Weekly presents its annual survey of “Virginia’s Largest Law Firms.”
The survey is contained in a magazine-style insert.
As in years past, the survey provides a ranking of the top 75 law firms in the commonwealth. The ranks are determined by the number of Virginia-licensed lawyers working in a firm’s office(s) within Virginia as of Jan. 1.
The survey provides basic information such as addresses and phone numbers. Many firms took the opportunity to submit an enhanced listing, including information such as Web site address, important contacts and areas of practice.
The two Richmond-based giants, Hunton & Williams and McGuireWoods, once again battled for first place. Hunton took the honors for a second straight year, nipping McGuireWoods, 302-301.
Despite a generally gloomy economical atmosphere, there is some very good news for the largest firms: Nearly half of them, 37 of 76, reported adding attorneys since the 2008 “VLLF” survey. Another 18 reported the same number this year as last.
In other words, almost three-quarters of the firms can say they grew or at least maintained their level of lawyer personnel in the past year.
Eighteen firms reported fewer lawyers in the 2009 survey.
The information in the survey was compiled by Sarah Rodriguez, with most data coming directly from the firms themselves. In some cases, we relied on firm Web sites to obtain information.
