Virginia man gets prison for catfish scheme

Two Virginia fish merchants have been sentenced for their roles in a plot where they passed off 10 million pounds of foreign catfish as flounder and other types of fish.

The Associated Press reports that Peter Xuong Lam, president of Virginia Star Seafood Corp., was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay $12 million to the government. Arthur Yavelberg, president of Silver Seas, was sentenced to probation for his role in the scheme.

Both men were accused of conspiring to import mislabeled fish in order to avoid federal import tariffs and dealing in fish that were imported contrary to law.
