ODBA president: Conference would work to benefit of all

Dear Editor:
The Virginia State Bar will soon decide whether to add a Diversity Conference to the Bar’s organizational structure. The Conference will be a mechanism through which the impact of changing demographics on the legal profession can be analyzed to achieve improvements in the legal system for the benefit of all Virginians.
Some contend that a Diversity Conference will promote racism and sexism. Some believe that a Diversity Conference will promote preferential treatment. My reading of the proposed bylaws for the Conference (available on the VSB’s Web site) leads me to the opposite conclusion. I encourage everyone to review the proposal and determine how such a Conference will work.
As to whether the VSB should be leading the charge on this issue, we should all be mindful that the Bar is composed of all attorneys in the state. The propriety of the Bar’s leadership on important issues pertaining to the legal profession, such as its ability to meet the future needs of the citizens it serves, should not be debatable.
Creating a Diversity Conference is a proactive step in the right direction to help ensure the bar will be able to meet the needs of the public in the future. The VSB Council will decide on June 18, whether to establish a Diversity Conference. I urge all who believe that diversity is a good thing to let the members of the VSB Council know that you support the creation of a Diversity Conference.
Lest we forget…
