Virginia Beach clerk to cut back hours

The Virginia Beach Circuit Court clerk’s office will close at 1 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays under new hours to start Oct. 13, Clerk Tina E. Sinnen reports.

The new hours will be Monday through Wednesday 8:30am to 4pm and Thursdays and Fridays 8:30am to 1pm.

"We are still working out all the kinks with this as it is very new to us as well, but we felt like this was the only way to deal with the workload after 20% of the staff had to be let go," Sinnen said today in an e-mail.

Sinnen laid off 11 clerk’s office employees last week.  The week before, the Norfolk Circuit Court clerk’s office cut 7 employees, according to published reports.

"We are truly sorry for the inconvenience, and hopefully if we find that we are able to keep up we can re-visit the adjusted hours," Sinnen wrote.  "The staff will be here in the office from 8:30am to 5pm but will not be open to the public.  The courts will remain open as usual but the clerk’s office will not.

"We will have a drop box placed in both the deed side of the office and the court side and will stamp in any filings brought in by 5pm on the day they are received.  You will receive receipts in your attorney’s boxes or in the mail.

"We will be getting the news out on the website probably today or tomorrow.  I hope most will understand, but I’m afraid some will not, but for right now it is what the Judges and I have come up with," Sinnen said.

  1. Isn’t there a Virginia statute that REQUIRES all Clerks Offices to be open at least EIGHT HOURS a day?

  3. Virginia law apparently permits early closing of clerks’ offices, as long as they are open every business day. Virginia Code § 17.1-207 generally requires the clerk’s office of every court to be “kept open on every day” except Saturday and Sunday. There is no code requirement specifying the hours that a clerk’s office must be open.

  5. Thanks, Peter…I was apparently confusing a JDR Court statute with that of the Circuit Court…
