Who was your most important mentor and how did that mentor impact your career?
Aside from my two brothers, Ken and George, William (Bill) Schmidt has been an important mentor and confidant. Bill is perhaps the most intelligent person I know and has also been a reliable sounding board for me. Among the many ways Bill has impacted my career was to nominate me for the board of directors of the Fairfax Law Foundation.
What do you consider your biggest personal accomplishment and why?
Aside from raising two daughters with my wife, one of my accomplishments of which I am proud involved my representation of a deaf person against a national retailer. Through the settlement of a lawsuit we were able to work with the retailer in writing their national employee training manuals to educate the salespersons in accommodating deaf customers.
What is the best bit of advice you ever received?
Never a judge someone from a telephone conversation. You never know what occurred in that person’s life just before the phone call.
How do you achieve a balance between your professional life and your personal life?
I genuinely love what I do, so it is my life. Also, I play ice hockey once a week which provides for exercise and camaraderie.
If you hadn’t become a lawyer, what field would you have entered?
I would have been a ski instructor. Maybe I’ll still do that.
What is your favorite book or movie and why?
12 Angry Men – great acting and a great insight on how cases are decided by jurors.
What are facts about you that most people, including your closest friends, may not know?
1) I ride a unicycle; 2) I have officiated at 12 wedding ceremonies of friends.
