Clerkship competition up

More news from the “it’s tough all over” department.

If you’re a law student or grad seeking sanctuary in a federal court clerkship, you’ve got a lot of competition.

Federal clerkship applications on the online OSCAR system are up 66 percent, according to a press release. A total of 401,576 electronic applications have been processed in fiscal year 2009, via the Online System for Clerkship Application and Review. Nearly 11,000 applicants are competing for 1,244 clerkship positions posted between Oct. 1, 2008 and Sept. 30, 2009.

And it’s not just your 3L classmates. Over half of the applicants through OSCAR were law school graduates.

The number of OSCAR-filed applications has steadily increased since the system was introduced in 2005. About two-thirds of all federal judges participate in the OSCAR program.
