Who were the important mentors you have had and how did they impact your career?

My 5th grade science teacher, Mrs Murch, who inspired my innate scientific curiosity and to Dr Dolores Clements, my dissertation chair for her guidance and support in completing my professional goal of a doctoral degree

What do you consider your biggest personal and/or professional accomplishment and why?

Professionally – Obtaining my PhD and serving as President of the Virginia Board of Nursing

What advice would you give to a young person graduating from college this spring?

Follow your passion, be open to new opportunities and always remember “it is not what you are but who you are” (Maria Kennedy/Schwartenager)

How do you achieve a balance between your professional life and your personal life?

It is a challenge that I am not sure I have yet mastered – but I try to connect with family each day. I have been happily married almost 30 years now – must be doing something right

When you were growing up, what did you want to be?

A nurse

What is your favorite book or movie and why?

This is difficult – I am a voracious reader and movie buff

Book – Common Ground by J. Anthony Lukas
Movie – Out of Africa

What are two things about you that not many people know?

I hiked a 120 miles of the Appalachian Trail alone_ “Solo”
I have been a vegetarian for 31 years
