W. David Harless of Richmond has filed as a candidate for president-elect designate of the Virginia State Bar, which would put him in line to be VSB president in 2012-13.
Harless is a partner and member of the executive committee at Christian & Barton LLP. He was elected to VSB Council in 2006 and joined its executive committee last year. VSB rules require a candidate for the position to have been a member of VSB Council for two of the previous five years and to submit a petition with the names of 50 attorneys by Oct. 1.
If more than one candidate files a petition, an election will be conducted by a ballot mailed to VSB members in November.
A native of Jonesville, Harless graduated from the University of Kentucky and the University of Virginia law school and clerked for U.S. District Judge Glen Williams before joining Christian & Barton. Most of his practice involves commercial, employment and products liability litigation.
Harless, 54, said he had been encouraged to get in line to be VSB president by a large number of people whose opinion he respects.
Irving M. Blank of Richmond, the current president-elect, will succeed Jon Huddleston later this month, and George Shanks of Luray will become president in 2011.
