Jacqueline K. Cunningham will succeed Alfred W. Gross as Virginia’s Commissioner of Insurance when Gross retires at the end of the year.
Cunningham has been deputy commissioner of the life and health division of the State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Insurance for six-and-a-half years. She has worked within the bureau since 1993.
Gross has been commissioner for 14 years and an employee of the bureau since 1981.
SCC Chairman James C. Dimitri said in a news release that Cunningham’s appointment “ensures a smooth transition at a critical time for Virginia’s insurance industry and its policyholders.”
The bureau regulates more than 2,500 insurance companies, groups and plans supervises nearly 184,000 insurance agencies and agents.
