Four seek Eastern Shore judgeship

Three lawyers and a district court judge have expressed interest in a circuit court seat in Accomack County.

Last month, the Eastern Shore Bar Association endorsed longtime Accomack attorney W. Revell Lewis III, according to the Eastern Shore News. Accomack lawyers Thomas Northam and Thomas B. Dix Jr. have also expressed interest in the judgeship, along with Accomack County General District Judge Gordon Vincent.

The vacancy will be created when Circuit Judge Glen A. Tyler steps down at the end of December after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

The position, however, will likely be impacted by the General Assembly’s judicial hiring freeze. It is among nearly 20 Virginia judgeships left without funding due to state cutbacks.

  1. The lawyers of this commonwealth need to contact the General Assembly (especially members of Senate Finance, House Appropriations and Senate/House Courts) and urge the Assembly to “unfreeze” the vacancies. The Judicial branch is supposed to be equal, and we as attorneys are responsible for protecting the integrity of this branch of government. The time for action is now.
