Drug court video wins award

Supporters of the 14 drug court programs in Virginia have two reasons to celebrate this week. Most importantly, the legislature approved another year of existence for the court-run diversion program, but there’s also national recognition for a video documentary on the project.

The video, “The Arrest is Only the Beginning: How Virginia Drug Courts Succeed” has a won a bronze “Telly” award for television documentary. The DVD was released in January of last year primarily to influence lawmakers to keep state money flowing, explained Roanoke circuit Judge Jonathan Apgar.

The Telly award entry was submitted by Roger Griffin who directed and edited the video on what Apgar described as a “shoestring” budget. Noting competition from major news and information networks, Apgar said, “I guess it is a fairly impressive honor.”

The now-award-winning video is available on the Supreme Court’s site as well as on YouTube (see below) and other court sites.

“We get a little statuette that looks like a hood ornament from a 1930s Packard,” Apgar said.
