APABA-VA honors Judge Lee

WASHINGTON–U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Virginia on Nov. 5.

The group held its annual installation dinner at George restaurant in Georgetown. Nhon Nguyen of Richmond is the new APABA-VA president, succeeding Tony Pham, who served for two and a half years.

In presenting the award (photo at right), Alexandria lawyer John Tran recounted that Lee was one of the founders of APABA-VA, which was organized in 1998.

In remarks to the group, Lee urged the members of APABA to seek judgeships when they come open, a theme he said he has taken to other minority bars throughout Northern Virginia this fall. There has never been a full-time judge of Asian heritage in Virginia; there have been two Asian substitute judges, Tran and Michael HuYoung of Richmond.
