Arlington Circuit Judge Joanne F. Alper will retire from the bench in May, she announced in a news release this week.
Alper was the first woman to serve in the 17th Circuit when she was named to the judgeship in 1998. She formerly served on the county juvenile and domestic relations court.
“It has been a great honor and privilege to serve the people of Arlington and Falls Church as a judge for over 20 years,” Alper said in a news release.
Alper sits on the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission and the Virginia Model Jury Instructions Committee, and is the Chair of the Arlington County Bar Foundation.
Alper said her retirement will be effective May 31, 2012.
