Judge who denied plea deal targeted for murder, authorities say

A robbery suspect allegedly tried to hire a hit man to kill a Virginia Beach judge who rejected a proposed plea bargain.

David Hugh Hance, already in jail on an attempted bank robbery charge, has been accused of soliciting for capital murder, reports The Virginian-Pilot.

Virginia Beach Circuit Judge Les Lilley was the intended target. According to court documents, Judge Lilley had declined approval for a plea deal in the robbery case a few weeks earlier.

Jail records indicate that Hance began soliciting a hit man to shoot judge Lilley for $50,000, and eventually made a deal with an undercover authority.

A special prosecutor will be brought in from Chesapeake to handle the case since the allegation involves a sitting judge, the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office said.
