After rejection by the House of Delegates, Richmond prosecutor Tracy Thorne-Begland has been appointed to a general district judgeship by the judges of the circuit court.
The decision comes in the wake of signs that General Assembly opposition to appointment of the openly gay attorney might be weakening.
A delegate who voted against Thorne-Begland switched his stance and publicly repudiated the contention that Thorne-Begland had flouted military law in opposing the policy against openly homosexual service members. Six leading Richmond lawyers wrote to the circuit court judges urging Thorne-Begland’s appointment.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Thorne-Begland’s appointment is effective July 1. Gov. Bob McDonnell issued a statement of support.
