No word from governor on judge appointment timetable

Gov. Bob McDonnell – who last month asked would-be circuit judges to apply to his office  for three open positions – is not saying just when he will decide on possible appointments.

“The governor’s office is currently considering the applications of those who have put their names forward,” said McDonnell spokesman Jeff Caldwell Monday. “He hopes to make decisions in the near future.”

McDonnell can fill three circuit court judgeships left unfilled by the General Assembly in the 6th, 10th and 29th judicial circuits.

Circuit judges have appointed two additional general district judges since the end of the Assembly session. C. Ridley Bain of Lawrenceville was named to the bench in the 6th District, while Stephen A. Hudgins of Poquoson was named to a vacant 9th District seat.

Previous circuit court appointments this year were Tracy Thorne-Begland to the Richmond General District Court and Phillip DiStanislao to the Petersburg Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

  1. About 6 weeks ago Del. Surovell wrote that the Governor would also get to appoint a new circuit judge in the 2nd circuit (Virginia Beach). Is that not accurate?

  2. It turned out that Del. Surovell’s speculation about a gubernatorial appointment for Virginia Beach was incorrect.

Judge Patricia L. West resigned effective June 28 to join the attorney general’s office. Gov. McDonnell’s budget amendment preserves funding for judicial vacancies that occur after Aug. 1 and before Dec. 1 when the incumbent judge would not face mandatory retirement until Feb. 16 or after.
