Former Del. Bill Cleaveland of Troutville has been appointed judge of the general district court for the 25th District.
His appointment last month by the circuit judges was effective last Wednesday, according to the office of Chief Judge Malfourd W. “Bo” Trumbo. Cleaveland succeeds Judge Louis K. “Kerry” Campbell, who retired in August.
Despite a general freeze on filling vacant judgeships passed by the 2010 General Assembly, Cleaveland’s appointment was made possible by a special budget amendment offered by Gov. Bob McDonnell this year and approved by the Assembly.
Cleaveland is one of eight judges appointed to trial court judgeships since the 2012 General Assembly adjourned. To remain on the bench, all eight will have to win election at the 2013 Assembly session.
Cleaveland served one term as a state delegate, stepping down in 2011 citing “significant family commitments.”
