Jail time ordered for bookkeeper who stole from law firm

A former staffer at a Norfolk law firm received both a scolding and a year behind bars for embezzling more than $100,000 from the firm.

Kristi Rind, 34, had worked for Warren & Associates for 12 years as an assistant, paralegal and bookkeeper, reports The Virginian-Pilot. “She became a very trusted and loyal employee,” said boss Paul Warren.

Warren discovered irregularities in the firm’s accounts, and police ultimately concluded Rind spent $102,000 in company money on personal rent, cell phone bills and vacation expenses, including a boat.

“Dante’s ninth circle of hell wasn’t for the murderers, it was for the traitors,” Circuit Judge Mary Jane Hall told Rind, according to the paper.

Rind pleaded guilty to four charges of embezzlement. Her sentence includes an order for $350 a month in restitution after her release from jail.
