Hearing set on Va. veteran’s license plate

CHESAPEAKE (AP) — A court hearing is set in a legal battle between the state and an Iraq war veteran over his personalized license plate.
Sean Bujno’s plate reads: “ICUHAJI,” which can be read to state: “I See You, Haji.” Some Arab-Americans object to that phrase. Bujno’s attorney says the use of the word “Haji” is not intended as a slur.
A circuit court judge ruled last November that the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles couldn’t deny the Chesapeake man’s license on the basis that it denigrated individuals of a particular nationality.
But in a letter sent to Bujno by the DMV, the agency signaled the battle over the plate might not be over.
His attorney plans to argue that the DMV is again violating his client’s free-speech rights at a hearing Wednesday.
