Attorneys who cringe at bombastic lawyer television advertisements with video mayhem in the background – brace yourselves. The latest trend in lawyer self-promotion may signal another retreat for the dignity of the profession.
Keep your eye peeled for lawyers’ rolling billboards – vehicles painted stem-to-stern with lawyer advertising.
A modest example from Sarasota, Fla., is displayed above. The firm in question appears to have a fleet of similarly decorated vehicles of various types.
The rules for lawyer advertising in Virginia would appear to allow such displays. Generally, “a lawyer may advertise services through written, recorded, or electronic communications, including public media,” says Rule 7.2 of the Virginia State Bar Rules of Professional Conduct, although a comment to the rule discourages “excesses of content, volume, scope or frequency.”
