Wait a minute. Richmond? As in Virginia?
Frommer’s, the travel company, has just announced its list of the 14 hottest travel destinations in the world for 2014, and the Holy City on the James has made the cut. Richmond is one of three locales in the United States to make the list. Sites in Hawaii and California also were named.
Frommer’s top destinations for 2014, in order from their website, are:
Big Island, Hawaii
Rivera Nayarit, Mexico
Rio de Janeiro
Ciudad Colonial, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Palm Springs, Calif.
The write-up notes that Virginia was the site of more major Civil War battles than any other, and that locals will observe the 150th anniversary of several significant fights – the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, the Siege of Petersburg – this coming year.
All of those locations, “plus the sites of Williamsburg, are within striking distance of Richmond, which was the capital of the Confederacy and is still flush with historic sites and museums devoted to that destructive chapter,” Frommer’s said.
The rundown continues, “But even if you don’t care a whit about the war, there’s still the gorgeous Beaux Arts Jefferson Hotel.”
And “Richmond is coming into its own as a choice regional destination with a growing slate of breweries, farm-to-table restaurants, and even white-water river rapid activities cutting right through downtown.”
Here’s the kicker: “While you weren’t looking, Richmond got cool.”
Well, anyone who lives in the metro area, but it’s really nice to get the spotlight and to enjoy such good company.
