Bar groups to consider judgeship candidates

With the announced retirement of U.S. District Judge Samuel G. Wilson of Roanoke, Virginia bar groups are preparing to evaluate candidates for the opening.

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have asked the Virginia State Bar and other statewide and specialty bars to evaluate candidates for the vacancy on the Western District bench.

Candidates are to submit on or before March 3 a résumé, a brief writing sample and responses to a questionnaire available on the VSB website.

Submissions should be sent electronically, and the original questionnaire should be submitted by mail. Interviews of candidates will be scheduled on March 26 at the VSB office in Richmond.

Contact VSB staff member Asha B. Holloman, holloman@vsb.org, (804) 775-0551, if you have any questions.

A Virginia Bar Association committee will consider candidates, as well.

The VBA requests that candidates submit the following by email:

  1. Responses to the questionnaire used by the VSB,
  2. A resume or CV and
  3. A writing sample.

The submissions should be emailed by 4 p.m. March 3 to VBA executive director Yvonne C. McGhee at yvonnemcghee@vba.org. The VBA committee will not conduct in-person interviews.

The Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys also will use a March 3 cut-off date to receive notice and materials from candidates seeking recommendation from those groups.

Candidates should forward the materials by email to VTLA executive director Jack Harris at jharris@vtla.com.

The VADA requests the following information submitted by candidates in an electronic format:

  1. Responses to the questionnaire used by the Virginia State Bar,
  2. Resume or CV, and
  3. A brief writing sample.

Candidate submissions should be made to VADA executive director Jill Wells Nunnally at jnunnally@vada.org. The deadline for VADA submissions is 4:00 pm, March 3. If you have any questions, please call the VADA office at (804) 649-1002.

The Virginia Women Attorneys Association will convene a judicial review panel.  Candidates must complete and submit the VWAA’s judicial candidate questionnaire (available soon at www.vwaa.org) on or before March 3.  Submissions  instructions are contained within the questionnaire.

The VWAA will interview candidates on March 26 at the VSB office.

Questions may be directed to Chandra Lantz, clantz@hf-law.com, (804) 771-9586, or Sheila Costin, scostin@holmesandcostin.com, (703) 260-6401.

The Old Dominion Bar Association also will conduct interviews on March 26 at the VSB in coordination with the other bar groups. Candidates should send copies of the same materials they submit to the VSB to BABurton@aol.com no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 3.

This item was updated on Feb. 4 to add information regarding submissions to the VADA, VWAA and ODBA. Information on the VBA evaluation process was added Feb. 6. We will update this post with additional information as it is received from the Virginia statewide and specialty bars.
