A well-known Portsmouth criminal defense lawyer is accused of assaulting a female deputy working at the courthouse.
Sterling Weaver was indicted Feb. 6 on a charge of misdemeanor sexual battery and felony assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, reports The Virginian-Pilot.
The alleged assault took place at the Portsmouth Courthouse on Oct. 25, according to the Pilot. Weaver turned himself in to detectives in Portsmouth last night.
A special prosecutor from the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office will handle the case.
In 2006, Weaver was found guilty in general district court after allegedly grabbing the throat of a Chesapeake prosecutor. The case was later dismissed in circuit court.
