(AP) The operator of a Richmond grocery store will pay $10,500 to settle a federal sex discrimination lawsuit.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced the settlement Monday in a lawsuit filed against Food Rite Community Supermarket.
The lawsuit says Food Rite refused to hire a woman in October 2012 for a vacant, part-time job as a courtesy van driver because of her gender.
The lawsuit says a manager indicated he wouldn’t hire a woman for the job out of concern that a female driver would be at greater risk of being assaulted. A man was eventually hired.
The settlement requires Lee’s Food Corp., doing business as Food Rite, to implement an anti-sex discrimination policy and distribute it to workers, conduct training and notify employees about the settlement.
