Ex-inmate sues sheriff, says he was jailed too long

(AP) A former Richmond jail inmate is suing the city’s outgoing sheriff, saying he was improperly detained for more than four months.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Darrell Goode’s lawsuit against Sheriff C.T. Woody seeks $2.35 million.

Goode was arrested on charges of failure to appear in court last November in connection with allegations that he didn’t pay child support. His suit alleges the charges were dismissed and he should’ve been released. Instead, the lawsuit says he was taken back to jail until his next court date.

The jail’s general counsel, Tony Pham, says the jail had records that ordered Goode held without bond.

Pham also says Goode “made no complaints” questioning his custody.

Voters will pick a new sheriff next week. Woody lost the June Democratic primary to challenger Antionette Irving.
