Edward E. Nicholas has joined the Richmond office of Vandeventer Black. Nicholas concentrates his law practice in construction, business and commercial litigation, insurance litigation and professional liability defense. His construction practice focuses on the defense of design professionals against personal injury and economic loss claims. His litigation practice focuses on commercial insurance coverage and directors and officers litigation.
Nicholas earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia.

John Conrad of Richmond has been appointed to the Christopher Newport University Board of Visitors by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine. He will replace outgoing board member Jerry Passaro of Williamsburg.
A trial attorney and president of The Conrad Firm, Conrad served 12 years on the Richmond City Council and was vice mayor. He was one of the founding members of the Greater Richmond Partnership and served on the Richmond School Board education advisory committee. He is a founding member of the Bank of Richmond board of directors.
In addition to appointing Conrad to the board, Kaine reappointed Frances Luter of Smithfield and Jane Susan Frank of Newport News.

Jim Reynolds has been named a partner with Gardner, Gardner, Barrow & Sharpe PC. He practices in the areas of personal injury, criminal defense, Social Security disability and other civil litigation. Reynolds previously served as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney for Danville until he joined the firm in 2005. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1990 from the College of William and Mary and his law degree in 1993 from the University of Richmond.

John M. Cooper of Shapiro, Cooper, Lewis & Appleton in Virginia Beach has been elected to a one year term (2008-2009) as chair of the railroad law section of the American Association for Justice during the group’s 62nd annual convention in Philadelphia. Cooper’s practice is exclusively in plaintiff’s side railroad and general personal injury law.

James L. Camblos III, assistant commonwealth’s attorney for Waynesboro, receive the Fraud Fighter Award from the Virginia State Police insurance fraud program. Camblos played a major role in putting a fraud offender in prison.

The Salem-Roanoke County Bar Association elected officers at its annual meeting. The new officers are:

Cameron K. Weiffenbach has joined the intellectual property and biotechnology practices of Miles & Stockbridge PC. He will focus his work on patent matters, especially those related to the fields of chemistry, biotechnology and life sciences.
Weiffenbach was previously counsel in a Washington, D.C., firm and also held various positions with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including administrative patent judge for the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.
Weiffenbach earned his law degree from Catholic University, his master’s degree in from the University of Maryland and his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Two attorneys have joined the business and professional litigation practice group of Sands Anderson Marks & Miller in Richmond.
Timothy A. Singh has joined as an associate. He focuses his practice on business disputes, including arbitration and litigation resolution. He was previously an associate with Sinnott, Nuckols & Logan in Midlothian. Singh earned his law degree at George Mason University and his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia.
Annemarie DiNardo Cleary has joined the firm as counsel. Her practice is focused mainly on defense of businesses and their executives from legal actions and liability claims. She also has counseled business clients on employment and contract disputes, insurance coverage and defense, and real estate development loans and lease disputes. She previously worked with Reed Smith in Northern Virginia, and law firms in Tidewater. She earned her law degree and her undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary.

Benjamin S. Candland has joined the Richmond office of McGuireWoods LLP as an associate in the firm’s tax and employee benefits department. His practice involves estate planning, estate administration, estate and gift taxation and chancery litigation.
He was previously an associate with WootenHart PLC in Roanoke. He received his law degree from the College of William and Mary and his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in Utah.
