ROANOKE—A Roanoke Circuit Court judge has acquitted a city police officer of a charge of unlawful wounding of a 17-year-old boy.
Judge William Broadhurst said after hearing evidence last week that Officer Daniel Meyer had reason to fear harm.
On Feb. 14, Meyer stopped a vehicle because of an issue with its registration. Police said the driver ran from the vehicle and Meyer followed, but lost sight of him for a while. When Meyer found the boy behind a house, he ordered the teen to raise his hands and get on the ground. The boy turned and lowered his hands out of Meyer’s sight, and Meyer shot him.
Meyer is an eight-year veteran of the police force.
