Charles H. Whitebread
Charles H. Whitebread, the former University of Virginia law professor who maintained his ties to the state through bar review courses and lectures long after he moved to the University of Southern California law school, has died. He was 65.
Mr. Whitebread had a national reputation as an expert in criminal law, the U.S. Supreme Court and juvenile law. That reputation was enhanced by his lectures for bar review courses and his summaries of Supreme Court decisions that he presented to judicial conferences in Virginia and elsewhere.
A graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School, he taught at the U.Va. law school from 1968 to 1981 and twice received the distinguished professor award there. The law school will hold a remembrance of Mr. Whitebread Saturday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. in Caplin Pavilion.
Mr. Whitebread received the excellence in teaching award this year at the USC law school and received a prolonged standing ovation when the award was announced at the law school commencement.
He died Sept. 16 from lung cancer at this home in Santa Monica. Survivors include his partner, John Golden; a sister, Anne Tower; and a brother, Joseph B. Whitebread Jr., a partner in the Washington office of Holland & Knight who lives in McLean.
Richard A. Ward
Retired Arlington lawyer Richard A. Ward died July 31 at his home in Irvington. He was 85.
A California native, he graduated from George Washington University and joined the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was an aviator in the Pacific during World War II and in the Korean War. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, retiring from the military in 1962.
He earned a law degree from the GW law school in 1965. After working for a firm in Washington, he joined the Arlington firm of Rice, Carpenter & Carraway, where he was a partner focusing on corporate and motor carrier law. He retired in 1985.
Col. Ward was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Military Officers Association. He was a founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in White Stone.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Redick Ward of Irvington; a son, Richard A. Ward Jr. of St. Helena, Calif.; two daughters, Normandie Ward Fischer of Gloucester, N.C., and Heidi Meadows Ward Ravenel of Charleston, S.C.; three stepchildren, Marion Redick McEnroe and Dana McEnroe Reynolds, both of Portland, Maine, and George P. McEnroe of Houston; and seven grandchildren.
Christine Jaigobind
Virginia Beach family lawyer Christine Delfino Jaigobind died Aug. 20. She was 52.
Ms. Jaigobind was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. She earned her undergraduate and law degrees from New York University.
In 1998, she founded the Custody Center PC of Virginia Beach.
Survivors include her son, Sean Jaigobind of Virginia Beach, two sisters and a brother.
John A. Tilhou
Virginia Beach lawyer John A. Tilhou died Sept. 9. He was 54.
A New Jersey native, he attended Western Illinois University on a basketball scholarship. He earned his J.D. and L.L.M. degrees from the College of William & Mary’s law school, then moved to Virginia Beach to practice corporate law.
He started with the firm of Waldo & Tilhou, then moved to Pender & Coward, then to Mays & Valentine, now Troutman Sanders LLP.
Mr. Tilhou served as president of the Virginia Beach Bar Association and a board member for several local banks.
Survivors include his wife Monica; three children – Andrew, Sarah and Emilie; and his parents.
