Alvin P. Anderson
Alvin P. Anderson, a prominent Williamsburg attorney and civic leader, died unexpectedly from complications of surgery on Nov. 28. He was 60.
A graduate of the College of William and Mary and its law school, Mr. Anderson served as president of the William and Mary Society of the Alumni, as a member of the College’s Board of Visitors and a member of the Marshall-Wythe Law School Foundation Board.
He received the Alumni Medallion, the alumni association’s highest honor in 1998.
William and Mary President W. Taylor Reveley III said, “We have lost not just a marvelous son of William and Mary, but also a leading citizen of Williamsburg and one of the preeminent lawyers in Virginia.”
Mr. Anderson began practicing law in Williamsburg with his uncle, Harper Anderson, in 1972 and was later a partner with Anderson, Franck & Davis PC, which merged with Kaufman & Canoles in 1999.
He was a member of the Kaufman firm’s executive committee and managing partner of the Williamsburg office until earlier this year. Gregory R. Davis, Anderson’s successor as managing partner of the office and a colleague for 25 years, told The Virginia Gazette, “He was an iconic lawyer, a visionary, and he had a wonderful forethought about legal solutions and problem-solving.”
He added, “Alvin was energetic, smiling, charismatic. He loved people and was as enthusiastic interacting with entry-level folks in our firm and new people in the community as he was with captains of industry and leaders in the community. He was always full-speed with flags flying. He was a pillar of our community, our firm and his church.”
Mr. Anderson specialized in estate and land use matters and was commissioner of accounts for the Williamsburg/James City County Circuit Court and a commissioner in chancery for that court and for the courts in New Kent, Charles City, King William and King and Queen counties.
He was a fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation and a member of the Virginia Bar Association, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia and the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
Mr. Anderson was a former chairman of the Virginia State Bar’s judicial nominations committee and of the First District Disciplinary Committee.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 40 years, Betsy Calvo Anderson, and two daughters, Sara Paris Huddleston and Mary Beth Sherwin, a graduate of the William and Mary law school and a litigation partner in Kaufman & Canoles’ Norfolk office.
H. Merrill Pasco
H. Merrill Pasco, the last surviving member of the World War II U.S. Army general staff and a former managing partner at Hunton & Williams, died at his home in Richmond on Nov. 28. He was 93.
A native of Thomasville, Ga., Mr. Pasco graduated from Virginia Military Institute, where he set Southern Conference records in the 100- and 220-yard dashes before reaching the finals of the 1936 Olympic trials. He is a member of the VMI Athletic Hall of Fame and a recipient of the college’s Distinguished Service Award.
After graduating from the University of Virginia law school, he began his legal career in 1940 as the 14th lawyer at what was then Hunton, Williams, Anderson, Gay & Moore.
He was called to active duty the next year and served as assistant secretary and later secretary of the general staff of the War Department, where he worked for Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall.
Mr. Pasco returned to Hunton & Williams after the war and was the firm’s managing partner for more than 10 years during the 1960s and 1970s. He was a corporate lawyer who served on the boards of several corporations and civic groups. He served for eight years on the State Council of Higher Education during the 1970s.
He took senior counsel status in 1980 but remained as counsel for Hot Springs Corp., Stratford Hall and Hollywood Cemetery. He retired in 2000.
Survivors include Carrington Lancaster Pasco, his wife of 67 years, a daughter, three sons, 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
