GOP activists push for open votes

December 10th, 2008 · No Comments · VOTING

Republican activists are pushing party leaders to abolish a rule that allows members of the House of Delegates to defeat bills in subcommittees without leaving any record of how they voted.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the current practice has been used by lawmakers from both parties to kill bills without leaving a voting trail.

Americans for Prosperity, the group leading the effort to change the rule, presented a petition signed by thier supporters to the House GOP leaders this week.

G. Paul Nardo, chief of staff for House Speaker Bill Howell, R-Fredericksburg, says the demand will be considered in the 2009 Legislative Session.
