Most bloggers have brown thumbs

Blogs seem remarkably like plants.  Some of us never acquired the sense of nurture that it takes to maintain a healthy plant in our homes or offices.  We know the pain of discovering that, once again, we managed to turn a healthy, decorative, uplifting bit of flora into brown death.

So it goes with most bloggers, it turns out.  They start out hopeful that, through their blog, the world will discover their wisdom and style and beat a path to their door.

Alas, as The New York Times reports, 95 percent of blogs are “essentially abandoned, left to lie fallow on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled.”

Allow us to nominate the poster child for abandoned blogs: WilderVisions.  In December, former Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder launched WilderVisions to “maintain an active voice” in city affairs.

That voice immediately ceased all activity.   Not one post has been added to WilderVisions since its introduction more than five months ago.

Hear Hear! While I don’t claim to be an expert on blogging, consistent and relatively frequent posting slowly builds readership, from my very small sample of anecdotal evidence. Thanks for the post.

Anybody who thinks blogs will succeed overnight are going to be unhappy with the result. It takes about a 3 to 6 months for a blog to become visible.
