Hassell: Judicial evaluation program is dead

July 16th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Judges

ABINGDON–Virginia Chief Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell Sr., speaking at a “town hall” meeting in Southwest Virginia, pronounced an obituary for the state’s controversial judicial performance evaluation program.

“It’s dead – that’s about the nicest way I can say it,” Hassell said. “That program will not exist for quite some time, I believe, because of the state’s dire financial condition.”

The JPE program prompted an unusual stand-off between the judicial branch and some members of the legislature during the 2009 General Assembly session.

This is an outrage. Courts are not courts of record, secret juries and no oversight of judges. Am I the only one who sees a pattern here?
