Preservationists have gone to court to try to halt construction of a Walmart near a Virginia Civil War battlefield.
The suit contends the Orange County Board of Supervisors “brushed aside” mounting concerns about the negative impact the store would have on a battlefield that preservationists consider one of the nation’s most endangered Civil War sites.
According to the Associated Press, the board voted 4-1 on Aug. 25 to approve the special use permit Walmart needed to build the a store.
Supporters of the store, including residents of the rural area, said it would not diminish the area and would provide countless economic benefits.
The Board of Supervisors has 21 days to file a response.
