Today’s VLW Daily Alert noted a lawsuit faulting Virginia Tech officials for their response to threats of suicide from a student who ended up taking his own life two years ago.
From The Roanoke Times , we now learn the lawsuit ad damnum in the case of Daniel Kim is $43 million. The lawsuit also demands that Virginia Tech cooperate in passing legislation to require public universities to notify parents of threats to the safety of their children.

The deceased student’s family is represented by the law firm of Hall, Sickels, Frei & Mims, the same firm that represents families of two victims of the 2007 Seung-hui Cho shootings at Virginia Tech who are pressing forward with lawsuits against state officials.

You’d think, of all the schools out there, Va Tech would be the best at dealing with this kind of thing. How many more student at Tech need to hurt themselves, or others, for Tech to have a working response?

As if parents weren’t already too involved in running their adult children’s lives. It’s not bad enough parents schedule meetings with their children’s college professors to argue over bad grades…now they want notices about who their childrens’ classmates are?!? How pathetic is your life when you have to spend it micromanaging the lives of your adult offspring?!? Such legislation would be totally unreasonable, and I feel bad for Virginia Tech and any school that would have to comply with such a law.
