In what will be a novelty for the Western District of Virginia, judges plan to publish a set of local rules in the next few weeks to govern practice in the federal courts. “We’re very close,” said Chief U.S. District Judge James Jones of Abingdon.
A proposed set of rules was posted in November with an invitation for comments. Jones said the comments now have been reviewed by the judges. “We’ve met and discussed them thoroughly,” he said. He expects the final version of the rules to be posted on the court’s Web site in the next week or two.
Expect a 30-day delay in the effective date, Jones said.
The rules would replace – and likely augment – the current set of standing orders for Western District practice.
